Driver’s Licenses
Issued by the state, Arizona driver’s licenses are required for newcomers as soon as residency has taken place — there is no grace period. Proof is needed of age and identity (previous driver’s license, birth certificate, or other identity documents). Even with a valid driver's license from another state, one must pass a vision test to obtain an Arizona driver’s license. Driver’s license fees and duration are based on the age of the applicant.

Auto Insurance
Proof of liability insurance is required in Arizona — at least $15,000/$30,000 for bodily injury or death and $10,000 for property damage in any one accident. This is mandatory before one can register a car in Arizona. For more information call (520) 629-9808.
Registration/License Plates/Titles
Pima County issues registrations, license plates and titles. However, if you wish a personalized or special license plate, call (1)800-251-5866 for information. The fee is based on the make, model, and year of the car. The previous registration card and license plates, plus the title or lien papers must be provided.
Vehicle Emissions Testing
Required by the state, general information concerning emission testing is available from the Department of Environmental Quality, Vehicle Emissions. Every car (unless it is a model year 1966 or earlier) must pass emission inspection each year before it can be registered.
